My Destiny: The Review...

My Destiny finally ended it’s almost two month run on KTNKenya on the 3rd of January 2017. The show was one of the best GMA shows we've had screened on Kenyan Television although it had quite a dramatic start during it's debut since KTN skipped an entire 15 episodes when they were supposed to air the pilot episode leaving everyone confused. We’re however glad that they realized their mistake and let the show start like it was supposed to... (They actually started it on episode 2 but we managed to catch on...)
Anyhow, My Destiny was a breath of fresh air as Kenyans got to watch the TomCar (Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana) tandem for the first time and the pair instantly won our hearts. Grace and Matthew had so much intense chemistry and it was a pleasure to watch them together, especially their ceaseless teasing scenes.

The plot itself was simple and moved along well and the fact that there was no distinct villain was also a plus for the creators because things happened naturally without being propelled by an antagonist. The dilemma of telling Joy that Matthew and Lucas were the same person was the biggest conflict for the show I think and they carried it out pretty well. The comedic feel of the show was quite appealing too and you could always smile when Gramatt, Agnes, Arnold, Joy and most especially Letlet were on sceen. (Letlet ended up being my favorite on the show…)

One thing I will however criticize is that the show had an element of old soap operas whereby there was endless teasing on our part as viewers and we ended up waiting episode after episode for something to happen. They teased us a lot when Grace was looking for Matthew and when Grace and Matthew were supposed to tell Joy about their relationship.

The thing with teasing is that it builds up expectations on how crazy and dramatic things will get when the ‘something’ finally happens. They did not fail us with Gramatt because it was epic when the two of them finally got together. With the case of Joy finding out about Gramatt, I felt that Joy did not elicit the kind of reaction we all expected from her. Yes, she was upset but refusing to talk to Grace was nothing much. We expected things to escalate to such a soaring level that Gramatt would have been caught in the crossfires. This then would have justified Grace leaving Matthew so that she could recover her relationship with Joy or at least let Joy have Matthew. This is why I feel that Grace did not have enough reasons to leave Matthew in the first place even if Selena had asked it from her.  Joy’s reaction to Gramatt was down played when it should have been the real reason why Gramatt would have broken up.

Things picked up when Matthew started dating Joy and Jacob returned to the Philippines with Grace. Jacob’s role in separating Gramatt was genius and Sid Lucero gave Jacob all that was crucial to make us believe that he was never going to let Grace go. His resolve was the main reason we enjoyed the climax during the end and it felt like a thriller with the hysteria and car chases, his fist fights with Matthew, and even the agreement he made Matthew sign to keep him out of jail. Everything was going well up until the point where Jacob called off his wedding. His decision was well justified when he explained himself at the church and also came at the right moment. However, I felt that everything that transpired after that was not necessary, starting with the death of Joy. There was no pending conflict that required Joy to die since she had already given up on Matthew. Matthew’s extended absence and Grace going to work in Singapore was also not necessary. It looked as if they just wanted to extend the program with nothing to show. The time frame in the end was also entirely confusing because Grace was apparently supposed to go to Singapore for six months. She left faith still a baby but when Matthew arrived, Faith could walk and talk which means that Matthew had been gone for at least two years but Grace  was  yet to returned from Singapore.

Matthew’s proposal, Gramatt’s wedding , James Wright singing "Kung Hindi Ikaw" during the reception, the balloons which were the trademark for the show were all on point except for one tiny detail. Nicole was part of the bridal party and she did not have her wheel chair with her as she marched down the isle! (when did that happen? O.o
Anyhow, it was a truly lovely show and I’m glad we enjoyed it.

  1. It was a good programme but with a few hitches as you have pointed. What did not impress was also how joy reacted i expected her to go full nuclear reaction on both of them and actually be the villain also nicoles miraculous healing was a bit too unreal coz we never saw her going for any actual treatment so they should have showed something on that as well. What really made me angry in the end was the death if joy. It did not have any justification since she was not a villain hence no rift in matthews and grace romance. All in all it kept me entertained
